Young journalists, photographers and videographers are invited to compete for eight prizes in the ‘Europe is More Than You Think’ Award 2009, organised jointly by the Council of Europe and the European Youth Press, the network of young media - creators.
We want journalists, photographers and videographers who share our values, to look beyond the headlines which dominate the common understanding of Europe – big government, international finance and trade agreements – and capture the Europe which, all too often, goes unnoticed.

Our challenge to young media specialists is to cut through the stereotypes and received opinion of what Europe is, to show what Europe really stands for and what it means to be European in the 21st century.

On behalf of the Association for the Study of Nationalities and the Harriman Institute, we are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the Joseph Rothschild Prize in Nationalism and Ethnic Studies.
"The Joseph Rothschild Prize in Nationalism and Ethnic Studies" sponsored by the Harriman Institute at Columbia University, is awarded
annually by the ASN for an outstanding book published in the previous calendar year on Russia, Eastern Europe or Eurasia in which substantial attention is paid to questions of ethnicity and/or nationalism.

UNESCO invites Member States, regional and international organizations, professional and non-governmental organizations working in the field of journalism and freedom of expression to nominate candidates for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2010.
The purpose of the Prize, supported by the Guillermo Cano Foundation, the Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation and JP/Politiken Newspapers LTD, is to honour a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if this involved risk.

The prize is intended to reward journalists who have shown dedication in the name of freedom of expression and information and to afford them the international recognition they deserve. Awarded annually, the Prize is marked by a ceremony and the winner is presented with the sum of US$25,000.

In memory of Rhonda Williams, associate editor of Feminist Economics from 1994 to 1998, the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) has established a prize to help scholars from underrepresented groups in IAFFE, whose work reflects Rhonda Williams's legacy of scholarship and activism, attend the annual IAFFE conference and present a paper.
The prize is oriented towards junior untenured scholars and activists.

Amount: $500 to be awarded at the IAFFE conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, July 22-24, 2010.

Criteria: The recipient's work in activism, advocacy, or scholarship should demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the following issues:
* Inequalities based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality.
* Interrelationships among racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism.
* Connections between scholarship and activism.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day on 10 December, an art competition is being launched by KISA - Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism, member of ENAR Cyprus, and the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation. It aims to promote and highlight the importance of Human Rights Day. Entries can be submitted in two categories: photography and painting/poster.
The winning entries as well as a selection of the best artwork submitted will be presented at a ceremony on 10 December 2009. The deadline for applications is 2 December 2009.

The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival in partnership with Adobe Youth Voices seeks youth-produced film, video and animated works on human rights issues made by youth ages 19 and under for its third annual YOUTH PRODUCING CHANGE program.
Armed with digital cameras, computers and their own boundless creativity, young people across the globe are bravely exposing human rights issues faced by themselves and their communities. YOUTH PRODUCING CHANGE provides a platform for youth to share their perspectives with audiences worldwide.

Selected films will travel to:

The Global Health Council's Excellence in Media Award for Global Health is dedicated to drawing attention to health issues that have a global impact.
The award honors those who have in the prior year most effectively captured the essence of a major issue in global health and conveyed it to a broad audience.
The Council welcomes Media Award submissions in the following four categories: Newspaper, Magazine and Major Print Publication (NY Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, TIME Magazine) Broadcast, TV and "New Media" (video, mixed media, radio and internet-based) Photojournalism Community Media (community, local, in-country media of all types, including newspaper, community radio and internet-based)

The ‘European Youth Capital’ (EYC) is a title granted by the European Youth Forum to a European city for a period of one year, during which it is given the chance to showcase its youth-related cultural, social, political and economic life and development. The first and current European Youth Capital is Rotterdam (the Netherlands). The European Youth Forum (YFJ) has awarded the EYC 2010 title to Turin (Italy) and EYC 2011 to Antwerp (Belgium). Considering the success the European Youth Capital initiative met and the great interest amongst applicant cities, the YFJ is launching a new call for the European Youth Capital 2012.

The prize, now in its third year, targets young people who have been involved with projects helping to promote understanding between peoples from different European countries. Role models for young Europeans The European Charlemagne Youth Prize, which is jointly organised by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, is granted to projects undertaken by people between 16 and 30 years old. The winning projects should serve as role models for young people living in Europe and offer practical examples of Europeans living together as one community. Youth exchange programmes, artistic and Internet projects with a European dimension are amongst the projects selected. The European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) is a new pilot scheme which rewards annually up to three EU regions which have the most outstanding political vision to boost their entrepreneurial environment. This label will recognise forward-thinking regions, irrespective of their wealth, size or competences. One of the main principles of the EER is to help regions to contribute to the implementation of the "Small Business Act for Europe".
