The ability to describe by means of linguistic expressions the content of images is characteristics of human beings, in contrast with the numerical features employed by computers. In order to improve the communication between humans and computers, it is necessary to provide knowledge representation models and mathematical tools able to capture and express the semantics of linguistic descriptors. This is a fundamental basis for the development of applications based on linguistic description and linguistic interaction with visual information.

All over Europe, migrants organise themselves in cultural, political, economic and social contexts. These migrant organisations (MOs) play an important role in incorporating migrants into their societies of arrival. The long-established argument in political sociology was that cultural, ethnic and religious differences between natives and migrants, exclusion from the civil society of the country of arrival and the quality of the migration process (the amount of chain migration) are significant for the formation of ethnically homogenous organisations, which were described as the "classic" cross- border actors.
The absence of active integration policy and the lack of political opportunities were also seen as influential in the orientation of migrants and their organisations towards their countries of origin. Additionally, the crossborder connections of MOs were interpreted as depending on the relevant country of origin's level of support for their citizens abroad. Transnational ... read more

The online workshop will take place over two weeks, and you will be able to participate at your convenience. Only recently has the ‘everyday’ emerged as a significant analytical concept in academia, thanks to groundbreaking studies on the everyday transformations wrought by the sociopolitical, artistic and technological productions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

What is perhaps most fascinating about these studies is that the quotidian has proven to be both ordinary and not ordinary when put to the analytical lens. Rita Felski writes, "The everyday is the essential, taken-for-granted continuum of mundane activities that frames our forays into more esoteric or exotic worlds.” What voice is the everyday given, deliberately or accidentally, in literature, cinema, history, and the visual arts? More specifically, how can analyzing the "everyday” be re-imagined as a new kind of critical practice for Italianists and Italian writers of all periods?
In our conference, the Italian graduate students in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of ... read more

Beyond Methodological Nationalism: Researching Transnational Spaces, Cross-Border Diffusion, and Transnational Histories Organized by the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS)Bielefeld University (Germany, 22 - 23 April 2010) The criticism of methodological nationalism has opened up new ways to conduct research on global and transnational dynamics.
Nowadays, the common methodological statement is that societal spaces cannot be regarded as equal to territorial spaces. Prominent methodological proposals are suggested by the global ethnography approach, the cosmopolitan theory, and the transnational approach. While the first combines large-scale ethnography with detailed examinations of everyday life, the second proposes to conduct research simultaneously on different spatial scales, such as global, transnational, national, and local dimensions. And the third, the transnational approach, refers to relational concepts of spatiality. Thus, this conference will l ... read more
